Populations at Risk

Approximately 50 percent of traumatic brain injuries occur to people riding in automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, and on bicycles or to pedestrians hit by these vehicles. Males between the ages of 15 to 19 suffer the highest incidence of this type of injury.

People 65 and older and children under the age of five are also at greater risk for traumatic brain injury, but the majority of their injuries are sustained from falls.

Those who over 75 are the most likely to be hospitalized or die from their injuries. Twenty percent of the general population experience TBI as the result of a violent attack, assault with a firearm, or child abuse. Another three percent are sports-related injuries.
