Proof of Neurofeedback Results

Through the years proof of neurotherapy's effectiveness has been largely antidotal butrecent studies indicate the neurofeedback is highly effective in treating TBI and other conditions. For example, a researchproject directed by Nancy Schoenberger, Ph.D. involved distinguished neurofeedback experts Len Ochs, Ph.D., and Mary Lee Esty, L.C.S.W., Ph.D., and was designed to evaluatethe potential efficacy of Flexyx Neurotherapy System (FNS) in the treatment of traumatic brain injury.

Twelve patients who had suffered a mild to moderately severe closed head injury at least a year before the study was done were randomly divided into two groups. All had suffered significant cognitive disabilities after injuring their heads and were still experiencing a degree of difficulty at home and work. Participants were thoroughly assessed before and after their treatments with one group receiving a regime of 25 neurofeedback sessions while the other group was put a wait-list control group. Follow-ups were done on everyone using standardized neuropsychological and mood measures.

Comparison of the two groups found that after treatment the participants who received neurofeedback experienced less depression and fatigue as well as significant improvement in occupational and social functioning. Some also realized an increase in their cognitive functioning. According to the study, "these results indicate that neurofeedback appears to be a promising new therapy for TBIā?¦"

Another study measured how well neurofeedback works on children with ADHD. Conducted in Germany, the project seems to support the contention that neurofeedback can increase attention spans and reduce impulsive behavior.The test used a rather large group ' 94 children between the ages of 8 and 12 'plus a control group. After 36 sessions over a three to four week period, the parents and teachers of the children in the group using neurotherapy reported that there was a significant improvement in the youngsters. Analyzed in the July 2009 issue of the Official Journal of the EEG and Clinical Neuroscience Society, this study has attracted the interest of medical professionals previously skeptical about this therapy.
